Catalogs

Each Shoebox catalog has a "pictures folder" where most of its photos are stored. Keeping all your photos in the chosen pictures folder make it easier to move them to a different disk or computer later.

Categories

To add the selected photos to a category, type its name in in the status bar.

To remove the selected photos from a category, click on it in the status bar and hit delete.

Double-click a category in the status bar to see all photos in that category.

Click the triangle next to a category in the status bar to see a menu with its full path, and other options.

Point to a category in the Info window to see a tooltip with its full path (e.g. /Places/Europe/France/Paris).

To find a category in the outline, type its name in the search field in the Categories window.

To add the selected photos to a category, click the button next to the category in the Categories outline.

To remove the selected photos from a category, click the button next to the category in the Info window.

To browse the photos a category, click the button in either window.

If two categories have the same name, you can give them unique long names in the Category Info window.

You can't add photos to some abstract categories like Things.

Favorites

You can drag a folder to the favorite folders to add it.

You can drag a category to the favorite categories to add it.

You can drag photos to a favorite folder to move them to that folder.

You can drag photos to a favorite category to add them to that category.

You can drag categories and favorite searches to the Finder to create smart folders.

Searching

You can go straight to any category, favorite, or recent folder by typing its name in the search field.

To join several words into one search term, enclose them in "double quotes".

You can search by date by typing 2/25/2005, today, or "last monday" (with quotes).

Dates

You can add photos to the appropriate date category by choosing Photos Dates Add to Date Category.

If the clock on your camera was set incorrectly when you took some photos, you can fix incorrect dates.

Info window

You can customize how camera names are displayed in Camera preferences Camera Names.

You can customize which exposure properties are displayed in Camera preferences Exposure Properties.

Double-clicking

Double-click a folder in the browser or the Info window to open it in the Finder.

Double-click a category in the browser or the Info window to show it in the categories outline.

In Photo preferences, you can choose what will happen when you double-click a photo.

Keyboard shortcuts

You can hit the return key to display the selected photo, and then hit return again to go back to the list.

You can control how Shoebox displays your photos using the top row of the keyboard.

You can rate a photo by typing a number.

In full screen mode, you can hit the R key to toggle random slideshow, and the 6 key to expand small images.

Modifier Keys

You can use the left arrow key to expand a category in the outline, and the right arrow key to collapse a category. Hold down the option key to expand or collapse all subcategories.

Hold down the option key while choosing Categories Add Photos or Categories Remove Photos to add or remove all the displayed photos, not just the selected ones.

Hold down the option key while choosing Categories Make Alias, and Shoebox will ask where to make the alias. Drag a category and then hold down the Control key to make an alias instead of moving the category.

Hold down the option key while choosing Photos Create Thumbnail to update thumbnails for photos that already have a custom icon.

Control-click (or right-click) a photo to show the Photos menu.

Control-click a category in the outline to show the Categories menu.

Control-click the status bar to show the Filter menu.

Control-click a list column header to show the Columns menu.

Web Pages

You can export categories and link to them on your website. Then, other people can import them simply by clicking a link. A wide variety of categories are available from KavaSoft.

You can link to photos from web pages. For example, clicking 2005 will show all photos that the reader took in 2005.

Services menu

You can create a category, search for photos, or enter your license key using the Services menu in any application.
